Local campaigner Lib Dem Nigel Rock to fight new seat of Kenilworth and Southam8.55.45pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 30th Jul 2007
Nigel Rock has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to be the prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the new seat of Kenilworth and Southam at the next General Election. In a close contest, local Lib Dem members chose Nigel, who is a well-known Stratford District Councillor representing Stockton and Napton Ward. Nigel who was born in Warwickshire, has lived and worked in the new constituency for many years. He is also a chartered engineer with experience in design, safety issues, energy efficiency and quality management. He is self-employed and is currently engaged with a low carbon environmental consultancy. Nigel Rock said "I believe that an MP's first job is to represent their constituents. Because my roots are in Warwickshire I feel I can identify with the people here. The new area is well spread out and will be an unknown quantity in electoral terms. I think the Liberal Democrats could do well here." He went on to say "Although I am best known as a local councillor I have always had a strong interest in national and international affairs. The Liberal Democrats have been advocating environmental measures for many years, something that has been neglected by the other two parties. This has become an urgent issue that needs to be addressed on an international basis. The local economy is influenced by decisions taken well beyond Warwickshire. I'm not surprised that people have lost their trust in politics. I became involved with the Liberal Democrats to see fairness for all." David Johnston, Chair of the Kenilworth and Southam Liberal Democrats said "I am pleased to announce Nigel's selection. Nigel has been leading important campaigns in the area, including policing of the M40, the environmental impact of quarry transport to the Rugby cement works and on post office closures, things that really matter to local people."
