Nigel Rock On The Leadership Election11.07.57pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 15th Oct 2007
Following the resignation this evening of Sir Menzies Campbell as Liberal Democrat party leader, Nigel Rock, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the newly-created constituency of Kenilworth and Southam, commented on the forthcoming leadership election: "It's never pleasant to change party leaders, whatever the circumstances, and all three major parties have done this in the last couple of years. Sir Menzies Campbell has made a remarkable contribution to British political life and to the Liberal Democrat Party, including his time as Leader. His statesmanship, modesty and wisdom have been recognised by all, including his opponents, and have undoubtedly enhanced the reputation of the party. The forthcoming leadership contest will take place in plenty of time for the party and the new leader to make a significant impact before the next General Election, and of course whoever is elected as Leader will have the wholehearted support of all members of the party."
