Tories Might Undermine Local Postman Role

Liberal Democrats have learned that Stratford District Council is prepared to undermine the role of the local 'postie' in South Warwickshire. In response to a question from Councillor Nigel Rock (Lib Dem - Stockton and Napton), Councillor Sue Wixey, the Conservative Cabinet Member, said that decisions on how the Council deals with its mail 'will be based wholly on the business case', and made it clear that no consideration would be given to the wider role that Royal Mail postal deliveries play in villages and towns across the rural area.

Nigel Rock said "It is depressing to see such a rigorous, closed mind approach. I recognise the need to ensure business continuity while uncertainty remains over the Royal Mail's industrial relations, but the Council should be considering the best total value for residents across the whole district - and that includes the value of the daily postal deliveries only Royal Mail undertakes. Local 'posties' are often at the heart of village life, and a valued asset. I'm surprised that Council Officers are involving themselves in something that most people would agree to have an adverse effect on local services."

Nigel Rock added "It's not so long ago that the Council, including its Conservative membership, opposed the closure of post offices in our towns and villages, and expressed concern about the notion of losing Royal Mail services and facilities. Rather supporting and help to save Royal Mail resources they are doing the opposite and undermining the service. With this sort of thinking it's clear that the Conservatives have no intention of looking after communities in South Warwickshire".
